What Is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
Testosterone plays a role in bone density, muscle mass, mood, red blood cell production, and sexual function. Levels decline naturally with age, and for some men the drop is larger than expected. TRT is a prescription treatment that supplements testosterone when labs and symptoms show levels are below the healthy range.
TRT is a medical treatment, not a lifestyle supplement. It has benefits and risks, and it isn’t right for everyone. That’s why we start with testing and a clinical review.
Who TRT May Be For
TRT may be worth discussing if you have lab-confirmed low testosterone along with symptoms such as:
- Low energy or persistent fatigue
- Reduced libido or sexual function concerns
- Changes in mood, focus, or motivation
- Loss of muscle mass or strength
- Changes in body composition
These symptoms have many possible causes. Labs are required before TRT, and a provider reviews your history and results before recommending it. Depending on what we find, TRT may not be the right fit, and we’ll tell you so.

How TRT Works at Newport MD
- Free 30-minute consultation. In person or by phone. We review your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and goals.
- Labs. Required before TRT. We draw labs in-house at our Newport Beach clinic; remote patients can use an outside lab. See Blood Testing.

Treatment Options
There’s no single TRT protocol that’s right for every man. After reviewing your labs, symptoms, health history, and preferences, your provider recommends the approach that fits you and explains why. Follow-up labs and check-ins guide any adjustments over time. Some men also add genetic testing to help personalize nutrition and lifestyle support around their plan. Newport MD prescribes only FDA-approved hormone medications, selected for your individual plan.
If testosterone therapy isn’t the right fit, for example because of your health history or because you’re planning to have children soon, your provider will talk through that with you.

How much does TRT cost? Every TRT plan is customized, so we review pricing at your free consultation before you start. Book your free consultation.
Do you take insurance? Newport MD does not accept insurance; TRT is self-pay.
Superbills: we can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Whether your plan reimburses anything depends on your coverage.
HSA/FSA: we accept HSA and FSA payments. Check with your plan administrator about eligible expenses (IRS Publication 502).
Risks and Monitoring
TRT has benefits and risks, and it isn’t right for everyone. Before starting, your provider reviews your health history and labs. During treatment, monitoring commonly includes testosterone levels and blood counts, along with other markers your provider decides are appropriate. Testosterone therapy can reduce sperm production, so men who want to have children should discuss this first.

TRT FAQ
How do I know if I have low testosterone?
The only way to know is a blood test combined with a review of your symptoms. Guidelines from the American Urological Association recommend confirming low testosterone with early-morning blood tests on two separate occasions, along with symptoms. Symptoms like fatigue or low libido can have many causes, so we look at labs and history together before recommending TRT.
Do I need labs before starting TRT?
Yes. Labs are required before TRT. We draw labs in-house at our Newport Beach clinic, and remote patients can use an outside lab.
