Symptoms Hormone Therapy May Help With

Hormone levels shift through perimenopause and menopause, and the effects differ from woman to woman. HRT may help some women with:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep changes
  • Mood changes and irritability
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • Changes in libido

These symptoms can have other causes too, which is why we begin with a consultation and labs instead of a standard prescription.

Perimenopause vs. Menopause

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, when hormone levels fluctuate and periods can become irregular. It often starts in a woman’s 40s. Menopause is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period. Hormone therapy can be discussed at either stage, and perimenopause treatment in Newport Beach starts the same way as menopause care: your provider looks at your symptoms, history, and goals to decide whether it fits.

Bioidentical vs. Synthetic Hormones: What’s the Difference?

  • Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as hormones your body makes, such as estradiol and progesterone.
  • “Synthetic” usually refers to hormones with a different structure, such as conjugated estrogens or progestins.
  • Several FDA-approved products are bioidentical. Compounded hormones are custom-mixed by a pharmacy for an individual prescription and are not FDA-approved products.

Newport MD prescribes FDA-approved bioidentical options when they fit your care. Your provider explains which options are being recommended and why. Read more in our bioidentical hormone therapy guide.

Is HRT Safe?

HRT has benefits and risks, and they depend on several factors:

  • your age and how long it has been since menopause
  • the type of hormone, dose, and route (for example, skin vs. oral)
  • your personal and family medical history

According to The Menopause Society (formerly NAMS), for many healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of hormone therapy for symptom relief may outweigh the risks. Risks your provider will review with you can include blood clots, stroke, and, for some regimens, breast cancer. HRT is not right for everyone. That’s why every plan here starts with a full review and continues with monitoring.

Non-hormonal options also exist, and your provider can discuss whether they fit (NICE NG23).

Do you offer menopause hormone therapy near Corona del Mar and Newport Coast?

Yes. Our Newport Beach clinic sees women from Corona del Mar, Newport Coast, Costa Mesa, Irvine, and across Orange County for perimenopause and menopause care.

Who is a good candidate for HRT?

Women with perimenopause or menopause symptoms may be candidates. A provider reviews your symptoms, health history, labs, and any reasons HRT may not be appropriate before recommending a plan. HRT is not right for everyone.

Can HRT help with perimenopause symptoms?

Hormone therapy may help some perimenopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disruption. Your provider will review whether it fits your situation.

Are there non-hormonal options for menopause symptoms?

Yes. Non-hormonal options also exist, and your provider can discuss whether they fit your symptoms and health history.

Are bioidentical hormones safer than synthetic hormones?

Current evidence does not show that bioidentical hormones are safer as a category. Safety depends more on the specific hormone, dose, route, timing, and your health history. Some FDA-approved estradiol and progesterone products are bioidentical, and Newport MD prescribes FDA-approved bioidentical options.

What is the difference between compounded and FDA-approved bioidentical hormones?

FDA-approved products have been reviewed and approved by the FDA for consistent dose, purity, and effectiveness. Compounded hormones are custom-mixed by a pharmacy for an individual prescription and are not FDA-approved products. Newport MD prescribes FDA-approved bioidentical options, selected for your individual plan.

Is hormone replacement therapy safe?

HRT has benefits and risks that depend on your age, time since menopause, the type and route of hormone, and your personal and family history. Your provider discusses these with you before starting and monitors you during treatment. This page is educational and is not medical advice.

When should I start HRT for menopause?

Timing is individual. Major medical societies note that the benefit-risk balance is generally more favorable for healthy women who start before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause. Your provider will discuss timing with you.

Do I need labs before starting HRT?

At Newport MD, care starts with a consultation and labs, and follow-up labs help guide adjustments. Some women also add genetic testing for added context on nutrition and lifestyle support. Labs are drawn in-house at our Newport Beach clinic; remote patients can use an outside lab.

Who prescribes and monitors my HRT?

Your care is provided and supervised by the Newport MD clinical team, Allyson Berkey, M.D. and Lindsay Morgan, MSN, FNP-C.

Can my first visit be by phone?

Yes. Your free 30-minute consultation can be in person or by phone.

Do you offer hormone pellets?

No. Newport MD does not offer pellet therapy. Your provider will discuss the options that fit your plan.

Does insurance cover HRT at Newport MD?

Newport MD does not accept insurance; care is self-pay. We accept HSA and FSA payments, and we can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Check with your plan about what it covers.

How much does HRT cost?

Every plan is customized, so we review pricing at your free consultation before you commit. Book your free consultation to get started.

How long before I notice changes?

It varies. Some women notice changes within weeks, while others take longer, and results are not guaranteed. Follow-up visits and labs guide adjustments rather than a fixed timeline.

Do you treat men too?

Yes. Newport MD also offers testosterone replacement therapy for men. See our TRT page for details.
