Genetic Testing in Newport Beach
Your DNA doesn’t change. Knowing it can help us personalize your care.
Newport MD offers genetic testing. It’s a simple cheek swab that shows how your genes tend to influence nutrition, metabolism, hormones, inflammation, detox, fitness and recovery. A medical provider reviews your personalized genetic report alongside your bloodwork, history and goals. Then we build a plan that fits you, whether that includes hormone therapy, peptides, vitamin injections, medical weight loss, or simply smarter everyday habits.

What Is Genetic Testing for Health and Wellness?
Short answer: Our genetic test is a cheek-swab DNA test that looks at genetic variants tied to nutrition, metabolism and wellness. It reads related genes together as biological “pathways” rather than one gene at a time. It shows tendencies and priorities. It doesn’t diagnose disease.
Many consumer DNA tests focus on ancestry or look at single genes. Our test groups the variants it looks at into dozens of genetic pathways, such as how you process folate and B12, handle inflammation or clear hormones. Your personalized genetic report then highlights the areas most likely to matter for you. Your sample is analyzed by a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited partner lab.
At Newport MD, the test is a starting point, not the whole story. Your genes show tendencies. Your bloodwork shows what’s happening right now. We use both.
How Does Genetic Testing Work at Newport MD?

- Consultation. Meet with our team to talk about your goals, health history, current labs and medications, and whether genetic testing makes sense for you.

Who Is on the Newport MD Genetics Team?
Short answer: Your genetics team is Taline Semerdjian, Genetics Coach, and Lindsay Morgan, MSN, FNP-C (nurse practitioner).
- Taline Semerdjian, Genetics Coach. Taline goes over your personalized genetic report with you in person at our Newport Beach office and provides coaching to help you put your results into practice.

What Will I Learn From My Genetic Test?
Short answer: You’ll see how your genes tend to influence key areas of health, ranked by priority, so you and your provider know where to focus first.
Your personalized genetic report covers areas including:
- Nutrients: how you tend to absorb and convert vitamin B12, folate, choline, vitamin D, vitamin C and fatty acids
- Weight: appetite signals, fat storage and energy expenditure
- Blood sugar regulation: glucose and insulin tendencies
- Hormone health: how your body tends to make, use and clear key hormones
- Cellular health: inflammation, detoxification, methylation and oxidative stress
- Heart and vascular: genetic tendencies related to cholesterol handling, blood pressure, blood clotting and vascular health
- Brain health: mood, stress resilience and memory pathways
- Sensitivities: caffeine, salt, gluten, histamine and iron
- Activity, muscle and skeletal: power, endurance, recovery, injury tendencies, collagen, joints and bone
About sleep and stress: your report doesn’t have a separate sleep section. It addresses sleep within stress, brain and hormone guidance. Your provider can connect those findings to your sleep goals.
These are inherited tendencies, not a diagnosis or a prediction. Many of them are shaped by diet, sleep, exercise, stress and environment, which is exactly why they’re useful.
What Are the Benefits of Genetic Testing?
- A more personal starting point. Instead of one-size-fits-all advice, your plan starts with how your body tends to work.
- Clearer priorities. Your report highlights the pathways most likely to matter for you, so we can focus effort where it counts.
- Better questions for your labs. Genetics can help us decide which blood markers deserve a closer look and track them over time with blood testing.
- A clearer place to start. Context on nutrients, caffeine, carbohydrates and training response can make it easier to choose what to try first.
- A one-time test. Your DNA doesn’t change, so you only take the test once.
Results vary from person to person. Genetic testing supports your care. It doesn’t replace medical evaluation, labs or your provider’s judgment.
How Do We Use Your Results to Personalize Your Care?
Short answer: We combine your personalized genetic report with your bloodwork, symptoms and goals, then use it to shape nutrition, lifestyle and monitoring decisions across your treatment plan. Treatment decisions are always based on your full clinical picture, never on genetics alone.
- Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). For men on or considering testosterone replacement therapy, your hormone, weight, blood sugar and cardiovascular pathways add context to the conversation about nutrition, training, lab monitoring and lifestyle support. Your treatment is still guided by your symptoms, exam and lab results.
- Women’s hormone replacement therapy (HRT). For women exploring hormone replacement therapy, insight into hormone balance and estrogen-related pathways, methylation and inflammation helps us tailor lifestyle and nutrition support alongside your HRT plan.
- Medical weight loss. Appetite, fat storage, energy expenditure and glucose pathways help us personalize nutrition and activity guidance within medical weight loss.
- Peptides and recovery. Recovery, injury, collagen and joint pathways give useful context when we discuss peptide therapy and your training goals.
- Vitamin injections and nutrients. Nutrient and methylation pathways (B12, folate, vitamin D and more) help guide which levels we check in your labs and whether vitamin injections may make sense for you.
- Gut and sensitivities. Gluten, histamine and caffeine tendencies can inform conversations about gut health.
Genetics doesn’t decide whether you need a treatment or what dose you take. It helps us personalize the plan around it.
Who Is Genetic Testing For?
Genetic testing may be a good fit if you:
- Are starting or already on hormone therapy and want a more personalized plan
- Have tried diets or supplement routines that didn’t seem to work for you
- Want to understand your nutrient, caffeine or carbohydrate tendencies
- Are focused on long-term health, performance or recovery
- Like data and want your care built around your own biology
It is not a test for hereditary disease, cancer risk, pregnancy or carrier screening, or ancestry. If you have a strong family history of a genetic condition, we’ll help you find a genetic counselor or specialist.
Genetic testing is available to adults 18 and older.
Is My Genetic Data Private?
Short answer: Yes. Our partner lab does not sell personal information, encrypts genetic data, and honors deletion requests. At Newport MD, your results are part of your confidential medical record.
- At the lab: our partner genetics lab asks for your explicit consent before processing your sample. It states that it does not sell personal information, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and stores personal and genetic data separately. You can request deletion of your genetic data at any time.
- At Newport MD: your report is protected health information under California medical privacy law and HIPAA. We never use your genetic results for marketing. See our privacy policy.
- Your rights: the federal Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) protects you from genetic discrimination by health insurers and most employers. GINA does not cover life, disability or long-term care insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Genetic Testing
What does the genetic test at Newport MD look at?
Our genetic test is a cheek-swab DNA test that looks at genetic variants related to nutrition, metabolism, hormones, inflammation, detox and fitness. It groups them into dozens of biological pathways and highlights the areas most likely to matter for you. At Newport MD in Newport Beach, our Genetics Coach goes over your report with you in person, and Lindsay Morgan, MSN, FNP-C reviews your results with your labs and incorporates them into your care plan.
Is genetic testing a diagnosis or a disease test?
No. Our genetic test is a wellness test that shows inherited tendencies, not a diagnosis. It doesn't tell you whether you have or will get a disease, and it isn't a hereditary cancer or carrier screen. Your genes are one piece of the picture. Diet, sleep, activity, stress and environment also shape how they're expressed.
How is this different from consumer DNA kits or ancestry tests?
Consumer DNA kits and ancestry tests mainly focus on where your DNA comes from. Our test is built for health and wellness. It looks at pathways tied to nutrition, metabolism, hormones and fitness, and gives practical guidance. At Newport MD, a medical provider also connects the results to your bloodwork and treatment plan.
How long do genetic test results take?
Results are typically ready in a few weeks. Once your personalized genetic report is in, we schedule your in-person results visit with Taline Semerdjian, Genetics Coach, at our Newport Beach office. Lindsay Morgan, MSN, FNP-C reviews your results alongside your labs and incorporates them into your care plan.
How do you use genetic results with hormone therapy, peptides or weight loss?
We use your personalized genetic report as added context alongside your symptoms, exam and bloodwork. It helps us personalize nutrition, lifestyle and lab monitoring around therapies like TRT, women's HRT, peptides, vitamin injections and medical weight loss. Genetics alone never decides whether you need a treatment or what dose you take.
Is my DNA data private and secure?
Yes. Our partner lab does not sell personal information, encrypts genetic data, and honors deletion requests. At Newport MD, your results are kept confidential in your medical record and are never used for marketing. GINA protects against genetic discrimination in health insurance and employment, though not in life, disability or long-term care insurance.
Does insurance cover genetic testing, and how much does it cost?
Wellness genetic testing is generally not billed to insurance, but you can pay with HSA or FSA funds. Please call for pricing, or we'll go over it at your consultation, including what's included.
Do I need to repeat the test or buy supplements afterward?
You don't need to repeat the test. Your DNA doesn't change, so you take the test once and can refer back to your results over time. Any supplement or treatment suggestions are recommendations you can discuss with your provider.
Genetic testing at Newport MD is performed by an independent CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited partner laboratory and provides wellness information to support nutrition, lifestyle and care planning. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease and is not a substitute for medical evaluation. Results and experiences vary.
